The sky breaks, the rain falls. The downpour slowly awakens a woman caked in salt, buried for centuries, the only survivor of the city of Sodome. Here, now, amongst us, she begins to speak. This is her story...
Olwen Fouéré Born in Ireland of Breton parents, Olwen is an Irish/French actor, performer and theatre artist. She has performed with most major theatre companies in Ireland and in the UK, playing leading roles in numerous productions in Dublin, in the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK and in the West End. She created the role of Salomé in Oscar Wilde’s Salomé directed by Steven Berkoff which premiered at the Gate theatre and toured internationally. At the Abbey, she created the title role The Mai and the role of Hester Swane in the world premiere of By the Bog of Cats…, both written by Marina Carr. Other work of note includes the role of Rosaura in Life is a Dream with Catalan director Calixto Bieito (Edinburgh International Featival ’98, Barbican Theatre, London, and BAM,New York); the role of Tamora in Siren productions' Titus Andronicus directed by Selina Cartmell (2005); Paula Spencer, la femme qui se cognait dans les portes…, a French stage adaptation of two books by Roddy Doyle, in various French theatres in 2008 including at the Bouffes du Nord in Paris. Other recent performances of note include her role as Woman in Marina Carr's Woman and Scarecrow directed by Selina Cartmell at the Abbey 2007;as Maeve in The Bull with Fabulous Beast directed by Michael Keegan-Dolan, and as The Cailleach in the Rite of Spring with Fabulous Beast at the London Coliseum. Fouéré features in many pieces by artist James Coleman which continue to be shown internationally. Until recently, she was an Artistic Director of Operating Theatre which she co-founded with composer Roger Doyle.
