At the beginning of the 21st century in Belgrade, in Serbia, we read the comedy by Jovan Sterija Popovic – The Upstart.
A woman who spent years in a stinky workshop with a husband who ill treated her and forced her to work hard, remains a well-off widow eager for kindness, beauty and tenderness, does everything she can to overcome her past and to secure her only daughter a future different then her life. Can this be mockery?
Her ambition and her intentions essentially can not be judged, with this she wins in the end. She gets a son-in-law who ‘speaks’ French (whether he is wealthy is of no importance to her) and believes that her daughter will live better then herself. Sussane Langer called comedy an image of life triumphing over chance. Fema in this play is someone who is happy when there is a celebration in her house. The order is maintained. Comme il faut.
